Formed in Finland in 1990, Thergothon stands as one of the most influential yet fleeting pioneers in the extreme metal underground. Though active for only three years before disbanding in 1993, the outfit played a foundational role in establishing the funeral doom subgenre. By stripping death-doom metal of its conventional momentum and decelerating the tempo to a glacial, suffocating crawl, the band forged an atmospheric and profoundly bleak sound that permanently altered the landscape of heavy music.
